Alumni Story: Brenda Malone

Brenda Tuck Malone, Hiwassee College Board of Governors, President Elect.

After graduating from Loudon High School in 1966, I worked for almost two years as a

receptionist in a doctor’s office. In the summer of 1968, I enrolled at Hiwassee. One of my first

memorable experiences on campus that summer was seeing a flyer encouraging students to

attend a Wednesday night service of the Christian Student Movement. What really caught my

attention was the offer of free watermelon to be served at this meeting. I LOVE watermelon, so

I decided to attend! That was the beginning of two of the best years of my life!

The warm, welcoming atmosphere at Hiwassee provided a fertile ground for me to

thrive spiritually, academically and socially. I became active in The Christian Student

Movement, Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, the Civinettes service organization and was

recognized in Who’s Who in America’s Schools and Colleges. I also received the Sidney

Galbreath Award for Citizenship.

While at Hiwassee, I met my future husband, Stan Malone. We have been married 46

years and live in Kingston, TN. We have one son, Andy.

After graduating from Hiwassee in 1970, I attended the University of Tennessee in

Knoxville and graduated with a B.S. in Elementary Education. I later earned a Master’s Degree

in Education from Tennessee Technological University. I taught school in Mobile, AL, Cleveland

and Kingston, TN. I retired in 2007.

My interests include quilting, volunteering at church and serving on the Board of

Governors (Alumni Association), as well as representing the alumni on the Hiwassee Board of

Trustees.

As an alumna of Hiwassee, I feel a desire to give back to the institution that holds a

special place in my heart. It was the place I discovered my strengths, developed a vision for my

future and found the tools and confidence to make that vision a reality.

I would encourage all alumni to remember the Hiwassee you experienced and find ways

to give back through service, financial contributions and prayers. We heartily welcome you to

attend our Alumni Association meetings held quarterly. We have an active, committed group of

alumni whose goal is to encourage and support the college’s students, faculty, administration

and programs as well as to honor those who have made Hiwassee the one we remember so

fondly. We would love to have you join us. Please check the college website for information on

dates and times of meetings.
